The modules or lessons on these National Institute of Justice sponsored CD-ROMs provide a computer-based training curriculum for a number of school safety scenarios in order to teach and assist school personnel in thinking about how they might respond when confronted with similar, potentially dangerous situations. There are five conflict modules presented that include: anger, threats, attacks with weapons, suicide, and weapons on campus. Each module includes tutorials and interactive scenarios to help school personnel in confronting and responding to each potentially volatile situation. The first module on anger provides general guidelines in dealing with anger. The tutorials include: understanding anger, responding to anger, and de-escalating student conflicts. Scenarios include: (1) an angry student in the computer lab; (2) an angry parent in the classroom; and (3) a fight in the library. The second module on threats aids school personnel in responding to a typical threat. The tutorials include: threat assessment, anonymous threats, and specific threats. Scenarios on specific threats include: (1) a fire drill; (2) a bomb rumor; and (3) an Internet hit list. The third module on attacks with weapons puts personnel in situations where they must react. The tutorials are on types of attacks and include: weapon attacks on personnel and weapon attacks on others. Scenarios include: (1) an isolated attack; (2) a lover’s quarrel; (3) an attack with scissors; and (4) a gun in the cafeteria. The fourth module suggests what to do in the event of a suicide threat. The tutorials include: assessing a suicide threat and responding to a potential suicide. Scenarios include: a note from a friend and suicide drawings. The fifth and final module identifies the potential danger of weapons on campus. The tutorials include: suspected gunshots and suspicious weapons with scenarios on a concealed weapon and gunshots in the hallway. The scenarios offer school personnel options when faced with a potentially dangerous conflict and input into the success or failure of the option selected or taken.
