The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) is Columbia’s oldest and largest guerrilla group. The Columbian government has experienced decades of civil conflict with the FARC. With the Columbian government’s recent decision to send military forces into the FARC’s demilitarized zone, the future shows continued conflict with the potential for escalation into war. This article discussed the ongoing negotiations and battles for peace between the Columbian government and the FARC. In addition, with the initial phase of the U.S. war on terrorism close to completion in Afghanistan, the next target would be the FARC which could have a significant impact on the FARC’s military position and its peace negotiations with the Columbian government. As the United States increases its military efforts against the FARC in Columbia, its antiterrorist efforts may be extended into the borders of Ecuador. The FARC’s recent incursions of violence and drug trade into Ecuador has prompted the United States to extend its involvement and support to Ecuador in its domestic security operations.
