This guide provides information on adult learning principles, teaching methods, and course evaluation for instructors who are training others to conduct a CSEPP (Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program) training program.
Abstract
Guidance is provided for the initial orientation session. This is followed by a section that discusses the adult learning process. Issues addressed include stimulation of the motivation to learn, making learning practical and active, applying knowledge to solve realistic problems, drawing on experience, and using a variety of teaching methods. Characteristics of an effective instructor are then outlined under the topics of leadership, enthusiasm, acceptance of other people's values, attitude, and language. An overview of the responsibilities of an effective instructor addresses class management, the physical setting, and the learning climate. Descriptions of methods of instruction encompass lecture, group discussions, computer-based instruction, group activities, and demonstration. Presentation techniques are then reviewed, with attention to the instructor's demeanor, mannerisms, use of the hands, eye contact, the use of humor, communication, voice, and body language. A section on instructional aids focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of overheads, videotapes, handouts, flipcharts, and job aids. The guide concludes with guidance for designing an evaluation of the effectiveness of the instruction and procedures for concluding the training.
