The authors describe the first 10 days of training in the Basic SWAT School in Pinellas County, Florida. The school is comprised of officers and sheriffs’ deputies from cities within Pinellas County and personnel from nearby MacDill Air Force Base. There is a high ratio of instructors to students and training is strict and regimented. Day one is comprised of classroom instruction on topics such as Nutrition and Hydration and Deadly Force Considerations. On day two, trainees are put through team formation and dress drills while on day three the trainees are taught about shooting positions and movements. Day four centers on lessons concerning camouflage and on day five the trainees must solve a hostage scenario in an abandoned food court. Search warrant training is the topic on day six while chemical munitions occupies day seven. On day eight trainees learn about bus intervention techniques and then focus on rappelling during day nine. Finally, on day ten, the last day before the written exam, trainees must solve another hostage situation, this one occurring in the Upper Club area.
