The papers and presentations in this binder report on studies about international crime and criminal justice issues. The first paper discusses the problems inherent in comparing international crime statistics. The author of this paper cautions that direct comparisons cannot be made without first taking into account the many factors that affect statistics, such as definitions of crimes and methods of record keeping and reporting. This paper is followed by a presentation entitled, “Transnational Organized Crime in Europe and North America.” This presentation appears in an outline format, with main points bulleted and little direct narrative. The third paper reports on the results of the second HEUNI study on the developments in the prison systems in eastern and central Europe and describes the progress and setbacks in the implementation of international standards for the management of prisons and the treatment of offenders. The fourth paper presents information about the current condition of Asian prisons and then offers two case studies that illustrate the prison situation in this region. It is accompanied in the binder by an outline of the presentation. The fifth paper in this seminar binder is entitled, “Introduction of the International Prison Policy Development Instrument.” It outlines a strategic framework for the future of international corrections. The sixth paper presents data on the overcrowding of prisons in 26 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Finally, an outline entitled, “Talking Points on Crime Trends in America” and a survey entitled, “The International Violence Against Women Survey,” are included in this seminar binder.
