The contributions of both sociology and anthropology are reviewed as part of this article's analysis of the factors that exacerbate violence in Latin America, including poverty, inequalities and fluctuations in income levels, impunity before the law, the likelihood of being arrested weighed against the severity of the punishment, and drug trafficking. It is noted that the causes for violence are not exclusively a product of economics and do not support a theory of economic determinism.
