This guide, developed by the National Injury and Violence Prevention Resource Center, is intended to inform school personnel and others about the extent of the problem of injuries to children in the school environment and solutions in solving the problem through an examination of what agencies in nine states are doing.
Abstract
Almost 22 million children in the United States are injured each year with an estimated 10 to 25 percent of the injuries occurring in and around schools. However, the problem of injuries in the school environment is often unrecognized and preventive measures neglected. Schools play an important role in addressing the problem of child and adolescent injuries. This resource guide was developed by the National Injury and Violence Prevention Resource Center at Education Development Center, Inc. The guide aids in informing school personnel, injury prevention professionals, parents, and others about the extent of the problem and stimulate communications on potential solutions. The guide is comprised of five sections that include: (1) understanding the problem; (2) examining the circumstances; (3) selected State examples of what is being done; (4) sample data collection forms; and (5) additional resources and readings.
