This report, which is produced annually by the Missouri State Highway Patrol Statistical Analysis Center and Public Information and Education Division, presents statistics on the State's holiday traffic crashes.
Abstract
The holidays involved are Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. The report's findings are intended for use in developing better traffic safety programs that can reduce the frequency and/or severity of crashes during these holiday periods. Over the Memorial Day holiday, 56 persons were killed and 3,526 were injured in Missouri from 1997 through 2001. In 2001 there were 1,255 traffic crashes in which 16 persons were killed and 632 were injured over the Memorial Day holiday. Over the Fourth of July holiday in 2001, there were 564 crashes in which 4 persons were killed and 265 were injured; 58 persons were killed and 3,533 were injured from 1997 through 2001. Over the Labor Day holiday in 2001, there were 1,205 traffic crashes in which 9 persons were killed and 593 were injured; from 1997 through 2001, 74 persons were killed and 3,402 were injured during this holiday period. Over the Thanksgiving holiday of 2001, there were 1,872 traffic crashes in which 16 persons were killed and 798 were injured; from 1997 through 2001, 78 persons were killed and 4,150 were injured over the Thanksgiving holiday. Over the Christmas holiday of 2001, there were 1,567 traffic crashes in which 10 persons were killed and 632 injured; from 1997 through 2001, 78 persons were killed and 4,150 were injured over this holiday period. Over the New Year holiday of 2001, 1,513 traffic crashes occurred in which 15 persons were killed and 597 were injured; from 1997 through 2001, 57 persons were killed and 2,891 were injured over this holiday.
