Abstract
Violence preventive measures can be subdivided into categories. These are universal interventions, which include, for example, the provision of violence education to all students, school safety measures, and improving postnatal care; selective interventions that target particular types of violence and victims; and indicated interventions, which involve, for example, the treatment of sex offenders or the provision of therapy for those who have been victimized by violence. From a public health perspective the American Academy of Pediatrics has outlined selective interventions to prevent violence against children. These include affordable quality child care and family support programs, education of parents about various forms of discipline, reduction in gratuitous media violence, expanded reporting of nonviolent solutions to conflict, education about anger, and an increase in treatment resources for alcohol and substance abuse and domestic violence. The criterion for the selection of priorities for funding interventions should be the numbers of people who will benefit if the intervention is applied. After briefly describing violence-prevention interventions in various countries throughout the world, this article describes interventions for family risk factors, namely, home visitation and parent education. School-based violence-prevention programs are also described, along with strategies for reducing war.
