This report presents preliminary data about the characteristics of inmates who were discharged from the New York State Department of Correctional Services during the year 2001.
Abstract
The report shows 29,185 inmates were released from New York correctional facilities during 2001. Fifty-eight percent of these inmates were released to parole supervision based on the Parole Board decision, 27 percent were released to parole supervision on their conditional release date, and 10 percent were released at the expiration of their sentences. The remainder of the preliminary data presented here describe those 18,059 offenders who were released for the first time in 2001 based on a Parole Board decision, conditional release date, or expiration of their sentence. The descriptive data shows information concerning the released offenders’ length of time served in custody. Data were broken down by commitment offense, felony class category of commitment offense, and minimum sentence length. In some cases, data were also presented for the years 1997 through 2001, for comparison purposes. Demographic data on gender, race, ethnicity, and age are included.
