This manual comprises lessons and materials designed to teach juvenile offenders and youth court volunteers about the causes and consequences of various crimes.
Abstract
This manual was compiled to help youth court programs implement a law-related education program as a sentencing option for juvenile offenders processed through youth courts. The lessons also offer a quality education to youth who volunteer to serve on youth courts. The 15 educational lessons in this manual focus on the most frequent offenses for which youth are referred to youth courts, as well as offering information about the legal system, individual rights and responsibilities, and how citizen participation impacts the justice system. There is also a focus on building skills related to positive conflict resolution, anger management, communication, and problem solving. The overview explains that the lessons and materials compiled in this manual are meant to be used as one component of the youth court system. Each lesson has step-by-step instructions for the teacher. While a professional teacher is not required, it is suggested that the teacher receive training specifically about law-related education training. The 15 lessons include Crime and Consequences, Victims of Crimes, Serving on a Jury, Jury Diversity, Vandalism, Who Must Attend School, Alcohol, Bullying and Sexual Harassment, Shoplifting, Conflict and Negotiation, the Juvenile Justice System, Solving Conflicts, Triggers, Intent of the Law, and Laws and Values. Each lesson plan outlines the outcomes of the lessons, the materials needed to teach the lesson, handouts, and suggestions for preparation and people to use as resources.
