The United States Probation Department for the Eastern District of New York's innovative and cost-effective substance abuse program is described in this article.
Abstract
This unique substance abuse program has been found to be cost effective with high rates of retention, and to provide powerful tools for abstinence, recovery, and the future for Federal offenders with substance abuse-related treatment conditions. The author provides a brief review of the conceptual foundations of this program. He describes its methods as including exercises with such positive results as simple behavioral effects, state-dependant reframing, response generalization, body awareness, affective choice training, positive self-efficacy, state orientation shift, resistance destroyer, and awakening the choosing self. Results are described in terms of statistical measures and personal responses. Directions for further research include retaining the basis of the program, which is rooted in Jungian theory and depends upon tools obtained from classical conditioning and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). The author recommends these simple behavioral tool sets for producing spiritual and depth psychological outcomes for substance abusers. A list of references is included.
