The crime counts contained in this report are for California Index offenses, which include homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. Crime counts were provided by police departments, sheriff’s departments, and contract cities. According to the data, the California Crime Index rose by 5.8 percent, violent crimes rose by 1.7 percent, and property crimes rose by 8.2 percent from 2000 to 2001. Homicides for the year 2001 increased by 9.2 percent compared to the year 2000; the number of forcible rapes did not change appreciably for this period; robberies increased by 7.2 percent; aggravated assaults decreased during 2001 by 0.7 percent; burglary increased by 4.9 percent from the year 2000; and motor vehicle theft increased in 2001 by 11.9 percent. The remainder of the report contains statistical data offered in table format. The report notes that while there are 75 California jurisdictions with populations of 100,000 or more, the narrative segment of the report only offers data from 74 of these jurisdictions. The data from the remaining jurisdiction are contained in the tables.
