This newsletter reports on a 12-week international training course designed to discuss emerging crime threats and offer solutions for engaging public participation in all aspects of criminal justice administration.
Abstract
Criminal activities around the world are growing in number, seriousness, and complexity as our world continues to become more sophisticated and global. As such, it is imperative that countries maintain effective and efficient crime prevention policies and a fair and swift criminal justice system. These objectives for criminal justice policy cannot be met without the participation and cooperation of the public in each country. This 12-week course looks specifically at how different countries can engage this much needed public participation. One of the most important aspects to garnering greater public participation is the promotion and protection of human rights and victim rights within the criminal justice system. This course examines how criminal justice systems can incorporate the needs of victims, as this is an oft-neglected area of criminal justice policy. Along with a course summary, this newsletter offers a list of the 37 lectures and 26 individual presentation topics that were presented by 15 lecturers, 7 faculty members, and the Deputy Director of Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI). Group workshop lessons are described and a list of the sites visited by the course participants is offered. Special events at the 12-week course are described and a listing of all participants and visiting experts is enclosed. Finally, a list of all the reference materials used in the course are presented, as is a description about future programs and a listing of the staff and faculty members of UNAFEI.
