This book examines the major advances in sexual offender treatment over the last decade and promising new concepts in treatment, supervision, and research by providing selected papers from the 6th International Conference on Treatment of Sexual Offenders held in Toronto, Canada in 2000.
Abstract
Sponsored by the International Association for the Treatment of Sexual Offenders (IATSO) and the Program in Human Sexuality at the University of Minnesota Medical School, the 6th International Conference on the Treatment of Sexual Offenders was convened in Toronto, Canada in May 2000 bringing together treatment providers, researchers, and supervision personnel from around the world. This book is comprised of selected papers resulting from this conference series. Three areas of service provision and research are highlighted reflecting advances during the last decade and needs for the coming decade. The book begins with a general overview of the accomplishments, challenges, and future directions of sexual offender treatment, followed by seven papers covering: (1) advances in sex offender treatment and challenges for the future; (2) a progress report on the multisystemic treatment for juvenile sex offenders; (3) collaborative treatment for sexual behavior problems in an adolescent residential center; (4) a restorative justice approach; (5) a case study on the treatment of pedophilia with leuprolide acetate; (6) a comparison between exclusively male target and female/both sexes target child molesters on psychometric variables, DSM-IV diagnoses and MTC:CM3 typology; and (7) somatic and mental symptoms of male sex offenders, a comparison among offenders, victims, and their families. Through this conference series, one of the most important goals is to advocate for humane, dignified, comprehensive, ethical, and effective treatment of sexual offenders throughout the world. Index
