This document provides a statistical picture of the Ohio court system.
Abstract
This 2002 Ohio courts summary shows a record number of new cases filed in Ohio courts. A total of 3,418,981 cases were filed in 2002. There were 2,249 cases in the Ohio State Supreme Court; 10,404 in the courts of appeals; 206,933 in the courts of common pleas-general division; 80,775 in the domestic relations courts; 96,357 in the probate courts; 280,572 in the juvenile courts; 2,432,465 in the municipal courts; 308,175 in the county courts; and 1,051 in the Ohio Court of Claims. The judicial system experienced significant increases in new case filings in foreclosures (27 percent), total civil (16 percent), and civil domestic violence (11 percent). Statewide, probate courts experienced 96,357 new case filings. The last time new case filings were this low was in 1995, with 94,230 filings. From 2001 to 2002, new case filings declined by only 3 percent.
