This report from the Massachusetts Department of Corrections (DOC) presents statistical descriptions of the offenders committed to Massachusetts county facilities during 2001.
Abstract
All but 1 of Massachusetts’s 14 counties has at least 1 county correctional facility administered by a county sheriff. This report presents the demographic characteristics of each county's commitments in 2001 through a series of figures and tables. This report presents a summary of county commitments from 1992 to 2001, and details county commitments by gender, race, age, education, citizenship status, marital status, and county of residence. Focusing on the current offenses of committed individuals, this report presents categories of offenses, including offenses against persons and property, sex, drug, and other offenses, before indicating the commitment statistics of each of these offenses by gender. Addressing sentencing and court information, this report details sentence lengths from 1997 to 2001, highlighting sentencing by gender, by types of sentencing, by the court from which individuals were committed, and by the committing institution. A glossary of terms used throughout this report is also presented.
