Abstract
Inhalants are second only to marijuana in terms of illicit drug use among youth, and the age at which individuals begin inhalant use is younger than for any other substance. Boys exhibit higher rates of inhalant usage in grades 4 thorough 6 and in grades 10 through 12, while boys and girls demonstrate relatively equal levels of inhalant use between grades 7 and 9. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service, more than 2.1 million children in America experiment with some form of an inhalant every year, and it is up to law enforcement officials to help institute changes in the way that inhalants are understood. This article presents a description of the various methods of using inhalants including sniffing, snorting, huffing, and bagging. The Alliance for Consumer Education develops effective partnerships for informing individuals about the proper use and management of household products that may be used as inhalants by children.
