Abstract
In 1998, the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) created the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign to educate and empower youth to say no to illicit drugs, and in 2000, the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign created “My Anti-Drug” murals offering youth the ability and opportunity to express openly the negatives of using drugs. Murals are a visual way of expressing one’s feelings and thoughts to the public. This guidebook developed by the Campaign presents five steps in planning an anti-drug community mural. The first step provides information on what needs to get done in advance, such as finding a mural artist, forming a team, selecting a mural type, scouting for a mural surface, securing a space, and obtaining insurance permits. Step two discusses determining the budget for the mural project that includes determine cost projection, secure funding, and thank sponsors. Once the community is ready for the development of the mural project, the next step is to step three, creating the vision. This step entails developing the team structure, finding an anti-drug theme, developing a mock design, getting the community involved, and applying the “My Anti-Drug” guidelines. Step four includes painting of the mural begins by assigning roles and responsibilities, determining the materials needed, preparing the surface for work, transferring the design to the surface, selecting the paint, and cleanup. The fifth and final step involves promoting and dedicating the mural by planning the details, determining the elements needed for a dedication program, publicizing the event, and sharing the your success.
