A total of 1,797 bombing incidents were reported to the FBI's Bomb Data Center (BDC) in 1999, a 22-percent decrease from the 2,300 incidents reported to the BDC in the previous year. The use of explosives in bombings accounted for 79 percent of the incidents; and 19 percent were incendiary; the remaining 2 percent consisted of devices constructed with both explosive and incendiary fillers. In 70 percent of the bombing incidents, the devices were "successful," which means they were either detonated or ignited; 30 percent were "unsuccessful." Forty-three percent of the reported bombing incidents occurred in the Western region of the country, and 27 percent were in the Southern States, including Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. A total of 429 bombings occurred in the North-Central States, and the Eastern States experienced 6 percent of the incidents. There were 123 casualties from these bombings, with 9 deaths. Damage to property was estimated at $2 million, a decrease from the $6 million in damages reported for 1998. A total of 244 incidents involved hoax devices, a decrease of 61 percent from the previous year. In 1999 there were 18 thefts and 8 incidents related to lost/missing explosives.
