In 2002, 15,239 crime index offenses were reported by local law enforcement agencies. This is an increase of 5.7 percent from the total of 14,411 reported in 2001. Crime index offenses include murder/non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft. There was a 5.8 percent increase in the crime rate. The total number of reported violent index crimes was 553. This represents an increase of 7.6 percent from the total of 514 reported in 2001. In 2000, 562 violent index crimes were reported. Violent crime accounted for 3.6 percent of total index crimes reported in 2002. Property crimes (burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft) increased by 5.7 percent. Property crime accounted for 96.4 percent of total crime index offenses reported in 2002. The 11,399 larceny/theft offenses reported in 2002 accounted for 74.8 percent of total index crimes. More than $12.4 million worth of property was reported stolen in 2002, with 30.6 percent of that amount reported as recovered by law enforcement officials. North Dakota law enforcement agencies reported 29,145 arrests in 2002. A total of 29,638 arrests was reported in 2001. In 2002, juvenile arrests accounted for 26.6 percent of the total arrests. Juvenile arrests were 49.5 percent of the total arrests of crime index offenses. The number of reported arrests for drinking under the influence (DUI) increased from 4,301 reported in 2001 to 4,467 reported in 2002. Arrests for drug offenses increased 5.7 percent from a 2001 total of 1,658 to 1,752 in 2002.
