This report presents updated information on legal developments at State and local levels pertinent to racial profiling in police practices.
Abstract
Most of the information presented concerns law enforcement activities that occurred as a result of legislation enacted or introduced since the 2001 legislative session. Information is provided for each of 41 States and for the District of Columbia. For some of the States, information on legal developments is included for counties and cities. For each jurisdiction, law-related events pertinent to racial profiling in the jurisdiction are briefly described. These events may include the content and proceedings of pending legislation, executive orders, enacted legislation, lawsuits and lawsuit settlements, reports on data collection, U.S. Department of Justice consent decrees and investigations, actions pertinent to previous legislation, municipal ordinances, U.S. Department of Justice settlements, racial profiling studies, consent judgments, focus groups, court decisions, State investigations, and statewide surveys. 124 footnotes
