In December 2002, a 3-day Indonesia-UNIFEI-JICA Joint Seminar was held in Indonesia, Jakarta on criminal justice reform. Currently, Indonesia is in the process of undergoing extensive revolutionary social reforms, where success depends on the success in reforming their justice system. The Seminar enabled members of UNAFEI, as well as other criminal justice officials from agencies representing all sectors of the criminal justice system in Indonesia to collect and exchange information and experiences in the areas of police administration; corruption; the legal training system; judicial reform; and community involvement in the treatment of offenders. It also provided the Indonesian Government the knowledge needed to proceed with improvements in its criminal justice process. This report provides an outline of the Seminar and various papers presented during each session. There were five core sessions: (1) effective administration of the police; (2) restoring the integrity of the criminal justice system-the elimination of corruption in the criminal justice system; (3) reform of the legal training system; (4) judicial reform; and (5) reform of the treatment of offenders-community involvement. The Seminar concluded with the adoption of final recommendations with the intent to enhance the Indonesian criminal justice system and contribute to the needs of the international community in general.
