The goal of the textbook is to make the reader aware of potential dangers, how to decrease the risk of becoming a victim, and how to react when danger does strike. The 14 chapters of the textbook offer safety tips divided by topic. Chapter 1 underscores the importance of being aware of crime and potential criminals. Tips are offered for how to avoid danger by minimizing opportunities to be victimized. Chapter 2 offers advice on avoiding danger while out in the community, such as on elevators or when walking alone. Chapter 3 discusses safety while out shopping or enjoying entertainment venues. Safety tips at money machines, public amusement parks, theaters, restaurants, and bars are presented. Safety with credit cards is also discussed. Chapter 4 explores car sense and security and presents information about preventing auto theft and what to do if your car breaks down. Chapter 5 offers tips on personal safety and driving. Safety tips on parking and garages, approaching your car, and avoiding carjacking attempts. Chapter 6 discusses the best ways to secure a home. Tips are offered for outside lightening, yard security, door and lock security, and security systems. Safety in apartments and in campus residences is also explored. Chapter 7 discusses safety while home alone and includes suggestions for screening strangers, returning home, and how to respond to home intruders. Chapter 8 provides travel tips; topics include hotel and motel safety, public transportation, air travel, and travel itinerary tips. Chapter 9 explores safety in the workplace. Specific risks to business owners, women executives, teachers, health care workers, real estate agents, and flight attendants are reviewed. Chapter 10 discusses how to avoid and prevent sexual assault. Sexual assault is defined and different types of prevention strategies are presented based on different types of rape behavior (stranger, acquaintance, gang). Chapter 11 discusses how to best protect children from crime, including tips on safe walking routes and abduction prevention. Chapter 12 presents information about safety for adolescents, such as street safety, school security, and conflict management. Chapter 13 discusses various means of defending oneself and the implications involved, such as liability issues.
