Guidelines are presented on the design, planning, management, operation, and evaluation of a mentoring program for youth.
Abstract
Mentoring is a strategy to help young people feel successful in life, as well as give them the confidence, resources, and skills they need to reach their full potential. These guidelines are geared toward helping mentoring relationships thrive and endure. They assist in improving current practices and offer a benchmark in determining how the program is doing. The guidelines confirm the importance of accountability and responsibility in meeting youths’ needs. In this second edition, the guidelines include new ideas and new practices reflecting the latest in mentoring policies, practices, experiences, and research. The guidelines are divided into four sections: program design and planning, program management, program operations, and program evaluation. The program design and planning section provides comprehensive guidelines that can be used to launch an effective new mentoring initiative. Under program management and program operations guidelines are presented for managing and implementing the many elements of a new program or for fine-tuning various elements of an established program. In the final section on program evaluation, the guidelines are provided in analyzing the program to ensure it is safe, effective, and is able to meet the goals set.
