There are 376 Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRP's) in England and Wales. Every 3 years all CDRP's are required to conduct and publish an audit of crime and disorder in their area, helping partnerships identify their most pressing problems by collecting and analyzing a range of crime and disorder data. The data came from a number of sources including police-recorded crime, probation services, surveys of the local population, focus groups, and information from local treatment agencies. About 308 audit documents and 365 strategy documents were available for review. The audit findings were that almost all (97 percent) of audit documents mentioned alcohol as an issue in some form. Alcohol was most commonly related to disorder/antisocial behavior, the nighttime economy, and violence. A list of schemes aimed at tackling alcohol-related crime and disorder were compiled from the audit results. Schemes were selected that aimed to address the issues of problem premises, glass-related violence, alcohol and the nighttime economy, and underage drinking. Case studies describing seven different initiatives are presented. Most of the initiatives had initial problems that could be developed or improved over time. Despite differences between schemes, most areas had some key issues in common, including identifying the problem, monitoring and evaluation, partnership, funding, and sustainability. 3 figures, 8 references
