Abstract
Domestic violence is a widespread and serious problem that can result in the death of the victim. Domestic violence takes many forms, including physical and emotional abuse, intimidation, sexual assault, and denial of rights. The tips and strategies presented in this handbook are designed to assist battered women in their quest for a violence-free life. Chapter 1 discusses how victims of domestic violence can get immediate help and offers practical advice for battered women who need to leave the violent household, such as a checklist of items that battered women should take with them when they leave the house. Chapter 2 explores the nature and causes of domestic violence while chapter 3 presents options for living a violence-free life. Practical information for women who want to move out of the violent home is presented and guidance is offered for women remaining with their batterer. Chapter 4 presents descriptions of resources available to battered women, including the Victim-Witness Assistance Program and sources of financial assistance. The Plan Ahead Checklist in the back of the handbook helps prepare battered women for an emergency situation.
