Following descriptions of Ohio courts, this report presents 2003 data on cases processed by the State Supreme Court, courts of appeals, Court of Claims, courts of common pleas, municipal courts, and county courts.
Abstract
Overall, the report shows that a record number of new cases were filed in Ohio courts in 2003, with 3,368,567 cases being filed. Of these, 2,237 were in the State Supreme Court; 10,905 in the courts of appeals; 211,376 in the courts of common pleas-general division; 79,527 in the domestic relations courts; 95,338 in the probate courts; 264,897 in the juvenile courts; 2,447,108 in the municipal courts; 256,045 in the county courts; and 1,134 in the Ohio Court of Claims. The general division of the courts of common pleas had a 2-percent increase in new case filings, and the other divisions of the courts of common pleas had as much as a 5-percent (juvenile courts) decrease in new case filings. There was a 5-percent increase in new criminal felony case filings, while delinquency case filings declined 5 percent. Overall, new case filings for county courts declined by 16 percent (52,130 cases), and municipal courts experienced a 16-percent increase in contracts case filings and a 32-percent increase in other civil case filings.
