Abstract
Dedicated to President Ronald Reagan, who in 1981 proclaimed the first National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW), this 5 minute video clip underscores the importance of attending to the needs and rights of crime victims. The DVD clip begins with a summary of the poor treatment afforded to crime victims within the criminal justice system before the 1980's. The clip shows how criminal defendants have had their rights upheld by the criminal justice system while the needs and rights of victims of crimes were ignored or pushed aside; the criminal justice system of the past did not incorporate victims’ needs within its purview. However, as a result of strong leadership and the Task Force on Victims of Crime, victim advocates are now on staff within most police agencies in the country and crime victims’ rights are recognized as part of the criminal justice process. The Office for Victims of Crime encourages the use of this DVD at public awareness campaigns and educational events designed to promote justice for all victims of crime.
