In 2003, there were 666 fatal motor vehicle accidents in the State, with 735 people killed. This marked a decrease of 33 fatal accidents and a decrease of 36 fatalities from the previous year. Of these fatalities, 32.5 percent had consumed some level of alcohol. Of all drivers in these accidents, 11.4 percent were legally intoxicated. A total of 119 drivers in fatal accidents were 17-20 years old. There were 56 fatal accidents that involved 57 motorcycles. Pedalcyclists accounted for 11 fatal accidents, and the pedestrian deaths totaled 137. A total of 35 hit-and-run fatal accidents involved 52 vehicles. Fifty-three percent of all fatal accidents occurred on straight roads, and 81 percent occurred during clear weather conditions. Of the known drivers involved in fatal accidents, 72.8 percent were males; and of the vehicles involved in fatal accidents, 58.1 percent involved passenger cars. A total of 60 tractor-trailers were involved in 48 fatal accidents that resulted in 53 fatalities.
