This article describes the capabilities of MILO, a versatile training tool designed to help instructors create a fully integrated interactive curriculum on a full range of subjects.
Abstract
The software is what makes MILO unique. Besides running on Windows XP, the software is built on Microsoft.NET technology and is developed solely by IES Interactive Training of Littleton, CO. Any of the three major plug-ins or other options may be added to the core system at any time. The design utility of the system enables trainers to build questions, videos, and any other information loaded into MILO to develop a lesson. Trainers are then able to play video and present questions or documents on a screen by using the "Classroom" module. Trainees respond to questions on wireless keypads, and the students' responses are provided to the instructor in real time, enabling the instructor to monitor and interact with each student's performance. "OnStage" is the presentation program for MILO. This application allows trainers to introduce material to students through various means. Any type of digital file--Word document, PowerPoint, images, or video--can be loaded into MILO. By means of a digital overhead projector, the trainer can present lessons and visually explain or demonstrate the material. The "Range" plug-in for MILO is an advancement in interactive training simulation. The Range system uses video editing and branching capabilities to enhance interactive video training. Allowing a scenario to be completed in multiple ways is giving officers the opportunity to practice transition techniques between more than one tactical tool. A graphics package allows users to build their own shooting ranges. Marksmanship training is also available. When all three MILO programs--Classroom, OnStage, and Range--are used in conjunction, a complete interactive training environment is created.
