This training curriculum on helping victims of domestic violence is intended for use with hair salon professionals in seminars throughout Idaho.
Abstract
Salon professionals were selected as participants for these seminars because they tend to see their clients regularly over a long period, are experienced listeners, and may offer a place where a battered woman can go without the abuser. The participants will not be encouraged or required to report suspected cases of domestic abuse, but will be trained to be a helpful and informed resource for victims in guiding them to available resources in their communities. The training sites will be certified Domestic Violence Centers. The 2-hour training seminar covers topics such as the prevalence of domestic violence in Idaho, signs of domestic violence, and how to discuss domestic violence with clients. This booklet contains instructions for the seminar leader that include the amount of time to spend on each portion of the training, suggestions for learning exercises, training content, teaching methods, and "talking points." Substantive material provided for participants addresses the common characteristics of a batterer; possible signs of abuse; basic information about domestic violence; the definition of domestic violence; the cycle of violence; a power-and-control wheel; the effects of domestic violence on children; reasons why verbal abuse is not recognized; a continuum of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse; creation of a safe environment in a salon; the nature of domestic violence programs; and how to respond when you suspect a client is being abused or the client discloses abuse. A training evaluation form for participants is also included.
