Using data from the Missouri Statewide Traffic Accident Records System (STARS), this report shows the trend in Missouri holiday traffic crashes for the last 5 years, with more detailed data provided for 2004.
Abstract
From 2000 through 2004, one person was killed in a traffic crash every 7.5 hours in the State. Over the holidays, one person was killed every 6.4 hours during the same 5-year period. A total of 377 persons were killed over these holidays, and 17,210 were injured. Over the Memorial Day holiday for the 5 years, 55 persons were killed and 3,089 were injured; in 2004, 1,300 traffic crashes caused 15 deaths and 573 injured; 1 person was killed or injured every 8.0 minutes. Over the July 4th holiday, 75 persons were killed and 3,382 were injured for the 5 years. There were 1,455 traffic crashes in 2004 that killed 15 persons and injured 667; 1 person was killed or injured every 6.9 minutes. Over the Labor Day holiday, 73 persons were killed and 3,076 injured over the 5 years. In 2004, 1,210 traffic crashes killed 20 persons and injured 563; 1 person was killed or injured every 8.0 minutes. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, 77 persons were killed and 3,314 injured over the 5 years. In 2004, 1,776 traffic crashes killed 13 persons and injured 578; 1 person was killed or injured every 10.4 minutes. Over the Christmas holiday, 38 persons were killed and 2,007 injured over the 5 years. In 2004, 572 traffic crashes killed 8 persons and injured 245; 1 person was killed or injured every 12.8 minutes. Over the New Year holiday, 59 persons were killed and 2,342 injured over the 5 years.
