This media and community outreach toolkit provides event ideas and sample materials to assist local planners in generating interest in the 16th annual National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month (Recovery Month), September 2005.
Abstract
Developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), this toolkit contains everything needed to prepare local events and activities for Recovery Month. The 2005 Recovery Month highlights three areas for improvement: (1) assessing addiction problems and making treatment referrals for substance abusers and their families; (2) increasing accessibility to treatment and ongoing recovery support services; and (3) promoting measures to make treatment more affordable, equitable, and available. The Recovery Month theme for 2005 is entitled, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Healing Lives, Families, and Communities.” The toolkit contains a section on media outreach that provides ideas for promotional events and gives advice about how to speak effectively with the media about Recovery Month. Sample materials include a media advisory, press release, opinion piece, and camera-ready letterhead and logo. A second section in the toolkit provides targeted outreach materials that contain background information in the form of fact sheets about substance use disorders. Finally, a comprehensive listing of resources is provided, including a Planning Partners List that names groups to consider collaborating with when planning Recovery Month activities, a customer satisfaction form, and a State-by-State listing of substance use disorder office contacts. The toolkit includes a CD-ROM detailing the planning toolkit components.
