After families receive an Attendance Intervention Team Meeting that involves school staff and the parents of the truant child, the State attorney's office summons parents and students to a Truancy Arbitration Program (TAP) conducted in the office. TAP hearings are facilitated by trained volunteers who act as arbitrators. School social workers also participate in the hearings. When appropriate, students are referred for counseling or tutoring. Parents are referred to parenting-skills classes. After each hearing, the parents and the students are required to sign a performance agreement that compels school attendance. The State attorney's office makes clear to both the parent and the child that all legal means will be used to ensure school attendance, including criminal prosecution of the parents. Preliminary findings from an evaluation conducted over the past several years indicate that the program has reduced unexcused absences as well as late arrivals at school. 3 tables and 2 figures
