The Be Safe and Sound campaign is a public education and awareness effort aimed at partnering parents with school administrators to reduce violence in schools; the campaign is an initiative of the National Crime Prevention Council and was launched in 2002. Two pilot programs in Kentucky and Pennsylvania resulted in positive outcomes for school safety and parental involvement. This handbook presents step-by-step guidance for implementing the Be Safe and Sound campaign in local schools, including procedures for assessing current school safety and security, forming an action team, identifying problems, convening a brainstorming meeting with stakeholders, developing an action plan and garnering support, and evaluating and revising the program. The model depends on the participation of school principles, teachers, students, parents, and other community members and, as such, it is crucial to include a representative of each group on the action team. Appendixes include information on how to conduct school surveys to assess safety and provide sample research tools, such as safety and security surveys.
