This article describes the image and audio enhancement and analysis performed at the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC)-West facility and at the NLECTC-Northeast facility.
Abstract

Boasting some of the best equipped troubleshooting laboratories in the world, NLECTC-West uses sophisticated computer software to extract vital information from video evidence. The NLECTC-West works with law enforcement officers to help produce high-quality suspect photographs, recreate crime scenes, and obtain clearer images of suspects, license plates, or vehicles. The staff at NLECTC-West developed a list of recommended practices for law enforcement officers who have videotape evidence and they teach a course on criminal investigations tactics that is certified by the California Commission on Peace Office Standards and Training. The staff at NLECTC-Northeast offers similar expertise and services in the area of audio enhancement and analysis. Both offices have criteria for the type of evidence they accept for analysis. Contact information is presented, along with the recommended practices for videotape evidence developed by the NLECTC-West.
