In this report, homelessness in rural South Australian youth, where little research into rural youth homelessness has been done, was being investigated through a three-stage project involving interviews with experts in the field of rural homelessness and/or homeless youth, focus groups with parents, young people and agency staff in Whyalla and the Upper Eyre Peninsula, and in-depth interviews on two occasions with homeless young people living in Whyalla and Ceduna. The research involved both Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people. Focus was placed on in-depth interviews with five experts in the field of youth and/or homelessness research. Two interviewees were from the United Kingdom and three were from Australia. Many areas of concern for homeless youth in Australia are raised with problems ranging from definitional debates, differing rural needs and issues, and the structural and emotional factors that add to the risk of homelessness for young people in the country.
