Data reveal that rates of personal crime increased in New South Wales (NSW) from the mid- to late-1990s. The incident rate stabilized for assault, sexual assault, and other sex offenses. However, for most robbery offenses the rate dropped from 2001 and onward. The NSW rate of murder and robbery with a firearm showed a statistically significant downward trend over the 15-year period covered in this report. The recorded rate of property crime in NSW increased throughout the mid- to late-1990s. However, there has been a significant decline since 2001 in the rate of property crime in NSW. Through the examination of police recorded crime data over a period of 15 years, from 1990 to 2004, this bulletin provides insight into the long-term trends in crime in NSW, specifically property and violent crime.
