Intended for members of Boys and Girls Clubs of America, this curriculum is designed to help youth learn about, understand, and accept people with cultures, backgrounds, and lifestyles different from their own.
Abstract
Key themes of the curriculum are to help youth view themselves as unique and special, understand the diversity in American society, recognize bias and unfairness, and assume leadership in confronting bias. The activities described in this facilitator’s guide relate to each of these themes. The activities are different for and geared to each of the following age groups: 6-9 years old, 10-12 years old, and 13 to 18 years old. Separate activities are outlined for peer leaders and parents. Each of the activities in the curriculum (all age levels) and the peer leader programs are designed to reinforce one or more of the core program areas. The five core program areas are education and career development; character and leadership development; health and life skills; the arts; and sports, recreation, and fitness. For each activity, the facilitator is provided the following information: the theme of the activity (one of the four key themes of the curriculum), core areas, learning goals, estimated time, materials needed, special preparation, key learning points, activity overview, background, icebreaker process, wrap-up, additional ideas, and alternate activity. The final section of the facilitator’s guide contains tools and resources for implementing the curriculum.
