This report discusses the work undertaken toward the promotion of the ratification and implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
Abstract
The United Nations Convention against Corruption was adopted by the General Assembly on October 31, 2003. This triggered the establishment of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, which is expected to be hosted by the Government of Jordon in Amman in early December 2006. To help with the promotion of the ratification and implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, a legislative guide was developed by a group of experts from all geographical regions and representing different legal systems. A technical guide to accompany the legislative guide will be developed, with the objective of creating a repository of best practices in building the institutional and operational capacity necessary to implement the provisions of the Convention. High-level regional seminars were convened during the end of 2005 and beginning of 2006 that focused on sharing experiences, good practices, and innovative initiatives toward the prevention of corruption. Cooperation with other entities both within the United Nations system and with regional institutes is described, including joint initiatives undertaken to further the goals of the Convention. United Nations cooperation with the private sector and the Global Compact in various activities that have promoted the implementation of the provisions of the Convention are also described. The second annual International Anti-Corruption Day was observed on December 9, 2005, and special treaty events were held at the Eleventh United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and at the United Nations headquarters. Technical assistance that has been provided to member states toward the implementation of the Convention is described, including legal advisory services and assistance in capacity-building. Preparations for the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, which was held in Vienna in January 2006, are described. Figure
