This study examined the benefits to a criminal investigation case in the utilization of a vacuum box instrument as a technique in processing a document for indented writing with the results yielding an identifiable fingerprint impression.
Abstract
Positive results from processing a document for indented writing can be beneficial in a criminal investigation, especially when it provides an identifiable fingerprint impression. The vacuum box technique creates a formfitting, electrostatically charged acetate film across the surface of a document. The acetate film is then processed with development powder to reveal indented markings. Positive results are then preserved. For the indented writing development procedure, this study used a vacuum box instrument that employed a combination of suction and static electricity to secure and charge acetate film across the surface area of a document. In this case utilizing the vacuum box, an identifiable fingerprint impression was developed and ultimately identified to a suspect. 5 figures, 1 reference
