Following a letter from the Director of UNAFEI declaring the successful completion of the 131st International Training Course, the newsletter presents the rationale and main objectives for the Training Course, which were: (1) to examine the current situation, problems, and effective countermeasures regarding the protection of victims of crime and the active participation of victims in the criminal justice process, and (2) to examine the current situation, problems, and effective countermeasures regarding the protection of victims of abuse of power in their respective countries. A course summary is presented that overviews the lectures, individual presentations, group workshops, visits, and special events of the Training Course. A total of nine lectures were presented by visiting experts, ad hoc lecturers, and professors and five observation visits to agencies and institutions were arranged to help participants obtain a practical understanding of the Japanese criminal justice system. Summaries are provided of the three group workshop sessions, which focused on the protection of victims’ rights, the response to victims’ needs, and the active participation of victims in the criminal justice process. Special events and materials distributed during the Training Course are listed along with the experts and participants of the event. The participants of the Second Special Training Course on Strengthening the Anti-Corruption Capacity of Thailand are listed followed by information about forthcoming programs and training courses, which include the 132nd International Senior Seminar on Strengthening the Legal Regime for Combating Terrorism, to be held in January and February 2006.
