Findings suggest that women do not blame alcohol for their partner’s violence; they hold their partner, not the alcohol, responsible. The women recognized that the disinhibiting effects of alcohol alone were not insufficient to explain their partner’s violence and abuse of them. Through in-depth interviews with 20 women who suffered violence and abuse from a male partner, this study explored women’s views on the subject of alcohol’s role in their partner’s violence. It is necessary that both substance abuse and domestic violence agencies acknowledge the impact of the other issue if they are to adequately support women, work with perpetrators, and not put women at further risk of alcohol-related partner violence.
