One of the main missions of MADD is to build collaborative partnerships with local law enforcement to work toward the goal of reducing the numbers of drunk drivers on the Nation’s roadways. MADD can assist law enforcement in many ways, for example MADD can provide resource materials, serve as victim advocates for officers and citizens, and can assist at sobriety checkpoints. Many local MADD chapters hold annual award ceremonies where local officers are honored for their excellence in deterring and arresting impaired drivers. MADD also partners with local school resource officers to offer prevention programming in schools, such as the Youth in Action program that trains young people to avoid alcohol and other drugs. MADD Orange County, California’s partnership efforts with Orange County law enforcement agencies is presented as an example of an exemplary model of cooperation. MADD Orange County’s staff and volunteers have offered the area’s 38 law enforcement agencies support at sobriety checkpoints, local coalitions, school outreach programs, and through the MADD-sponsored victim impact panel presentations.
