This report examines the human rights violations of women in Côte d'Ivoire caused by systematic rape and sexual assault in the context of the political and military crisis.
Abstract
The current political and military crisis in Côte d'Ivoire has led to serious human rights abuses committed in the country since its independence in 1960. This human rights crisis was provoked by the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people both inside and outside Côte d'Ivoire increasing the vulnerability of women. Women of all ages and origins have been raped by all parties to the conflict and remain without access to effective remedy and medical care. This report demonstrates the impossibility for survivors to access adequate and effective medical care. The scale of rape and sexual violence in Côte d'Ivoire in the course of armed conflict has been largely underestimated and women have become the forgotten victims of the conflict. Several recommendations are presented by Amnesty International promoting a concerted and long term response to the ordeal suffered by women in Côte d'Ivoire amid this conflict. Highlights of these recommendations include: (1) condemn violence against women and girls in any circumstances; (2) involve women fully in peace processes and reconstruction programs; (3) provide immediate and effective assistance to victims of violence against women and takes steps to prevent future violations against women; (4) commit to taking concrete measures to end impunity for violence against women; and (5) ensure human rights defenders can carry-out their human rights work without fear. In 2002, an armed uprising led to a serious political and military crisis in Côte d'Ivoire history, splitting or dividing the country in two. Hundreds or thousands of women and girls have been victims of widespread systematic rape and sexual assault committed by combatant forces or civilians. This report is the result of research conducted primarily in 2005 and 2006, including interviews with rape victims. It contains recommendations requesting the prevention and eradication of sexual violence committed by forces and supporters.
