The guide's first section presents principles for the design, planning, and delivery of drug prevention programs based on research. Principles of drug prevention planning are distinguished for family programs, school programs, and community programs. Five principles are presented for prevention program delivery in general. Following the statement of principles for program design, planning, and delivery, three chapters pose various questions pertinent to drug prevention that targets children and youth. Each question is answered with relevant research findings. The chapters focus on questions and answers that deal with risk and protective factors for drug use, planning for drug abuse prevention in the community, and applying prevention principles to drug abuse prevention programs. A fourth chapter provides examples of research-based school drug abuse prevention programs. The programs are categorized as "universal" programs, "selective" programs, "indicated" programs, and "tiered" programs. Various types of program examples are shown for elementary, middle, and high schools. The concluding chapter lists selected annotated resources and references.
