The issue of substance-exposed children is a global problem impacting all systems of society. The challenge of meeting the needs of substance-exposed children is here in many daycare, preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school classrooms. The intent of the training program is to assist educators in working with these special students. Both the training video and the participant workbook are intended to be used in conjunction with each other in a comprehensive 1- to 2-day training workshop. They both address four major topics: medical aspects, the home and community environment, the school and classroom environment, and behaviors and interventions. Within the section of behaviors and interventions, language development, cognitive development, and social/emotional development are addressed. Today, teachers no longer play the role of an educator only but play the roles of social worker and problem-solver. Their role has become multidimensional with the increase in high-risk students, such as substance abuse exposed. This training package provides educators with comprehensive information and tools to assist them in establishing a responsive and nurturing classroom environment in order to build self-esteem and create a safe environment for these high-risk children.
