This statement of intent of the New Zealand Ministry of Justice presents its strategic direction and describes the major activities it will undertake in the coming fiscal year (July 1, 2007-June 30, 2008).
Abstract
Part I, "Strategic Context and Direction," describes the role of the Ministry and outlines its three core functions. One core function is the delivery of operational services, including court and tribunal-related services, collections, electoral services, and negotiation for settling claims under the Treaty of Waitangi. Other functions are the provision of policy advice and leadership of the justice sector. Part I summarizes the significant trends in the environment that influence the Ministry's priorities and the way services are provided. This is followed by an outline of the Ministry's direction for the 3 years to 2009/10. The 3-year plan consists of initiatives pertinent to four themes: putting service first; ensuring simple, connected processes; building knowledge and expertise; and enhancing sector collaboration. Part II, "Forecast Service Performance and Financial Statements," describes the outputs to be delivered by the Ministry in 2007/08, including the performance standards and projections associated with those outputs. The Statement of Forecast Service Performance reflects the work done in the first year of a long-term project to develop a new performance measurement framework for the Ministry. Part II also contains the Ministry's forecast statements. Part III, "Supporting Information," presents the Ministry's structure and management of operations, its provision of court services, and information on the Crown entities and other service providers funded through Vote Justice nondepartmental output classes.
