This paper discusses the evolution of resilience research and practice utilizing Resilience/Health Realization to inform prevention efforts and move beyond an outside-in perspective to an inside-out approach to student well-being.
Abstract
By looking more deeply to root causes, realizing that human beings create experience of anything in the moment with their thinking, the National Resilience Center at the University of Minnesota teaches individuals how they operate from the inside-out, called the Resilience/Health Realization approach. The goal in schools is to achieve the best possible learning experience for students by assuring that the principles of Resilience/Health Realization are functionally understood by staff members. Three principles form the success in teaching Resilience/Health Realization and can be taught at any age or grade level. These principles are: thinker (we create our experience of life with our thinking), noticer (human beings have awareness, the ability to bring thought to life) and knower (every person has wisdom within). These principles must be diligently taught. Students must be taught how they operate and prepare them to tap their natural resilience. Beginning when children are very young and continuing throughout life, it is imperative that family, school and community systems make sure that every child is taught how they operate from the inside-out. Teaching should not be diverted to how not to be violent, but focus more deeply on discovering well-being. The root cause of safe schools must be addressed. Persistent, lasting school safety depends on students and adults realizing natural mental health which begins with deep essence of a drive to self-right and tap natural resilience.
